Beckham, MLS
That's what will happen if James Cooke from Brookfield, Mass. has his way.  In between my pre-nap nap and my nap, I had some time on my hands to do nothing, so that's exactly what I did.  I grabbed a coffee and started reading the USA Today, where on their back pages they have room for readers comments.

Now USA Today selected this comment for print which tells me that sadly, it was the best suggestion of all...or the gayest.

'Soccer Needs More Excitement Than An Aging Superstar'

The article (comment) states that David Beckham's one man show isn't the only answer to increasing soccer's popularity in America.  It continues; 'Many Americans like sporting contests...impose a shot clock like the one used in Basketball, the team with the ball would have to take a shot within 5 minutes...

Another suggestion: Award 2 points if the ball is kicked in the net from more than 30 yards away...  this would allow teams to catch up...and be more entertaining to spectators.

Okay, agreed - Becks can't turn around the game all by himself, he'll need support of marketing, the league, the fans and all the agents overseas to convince their clients to make the move to the mighty MLS.  So yes, it will take a lot more.

Aging superstar?  Interesting comment James, you've obviously not been paying attention to his career these past 10 months; he's having a fantastic year.

Now regarding the other comments about changing the rules to make the game more exciting...Just like in hockey and world history, Americans always seek to change something to fit their attention deficit mind spans.  The game of 'soccer' is absolutely perfect the way it is.

The MLS will die a slow death before it ever changes its rules, here's the thing Opi - the MLS must conform to FIFA's mandate if they are to remain part of the world's soccer stage.   The men's National Team, most of whom play in the MLS, need to play under the same rules as the teams against whom they will be competing.  It would be like teams from the CFL competing against teams from the NFL.

So no, soccer won't change it's rules to fit the needs of the American populace, but who cares, in 10 years we'll be over run my Mexicans so ipso facto, soccer will be the most dominant sport in the USA.

So let's see what changes first, the immigration laws or the MLS rules...
